Cat Beds
If there is one thing to be said about cats and their beds, it's "they like their cat beds warm."
Cats are like heat magnets. Somehow they always find that warm spot on the newly dried clothes in the laundry basket or that tiny sliver of sunshine peeking out the window and through the curtains.
So it only seems natural then when we go shopping for a nice cat bed we should find the ones that incorporate some kind of thermal enhancement.
Following are the various types of heated cat beds you will find.
1) Naturally Warming and Self Warming Cat Beds
Naturally warming cat beds and cat pads rely on the materials used such as fleece or thermal-retaining fabric coupled with your cat's own body heat to keep the pet bed warm.
Some cat beds are constructed in such a way as to help retain heat. For example, the Petmate Burrow Bed has a hood which gives the cat bed an added sense of security and warmth. In addition some products incorporate a thermal core which can reflect back some of the cat's body heat.
The advantage of these types of naturally heated cat beds is that they do not required batteries or any external electricity to operate.
2) Non-Electric Heating Pads
Non-electric heating pads are made of microwavable material that you heat and then put under your cat's blanket or bed. Depending upon the product, some non-electric heating pads can retain their heat for up to 12 hours.
Like the naturally warming and self warming cat beds these cat bed warmers do not require any external electric power to operate.
However, these types of pet warming devices are not thermally controlled so you need to be careful that they are not initially overheated.
3) Indoor and Outdoor Electric Heating Pads and Bed Warmers
These types of pet bed warmers use electricity so they are either battery powered or plugged into an electrical outlet. You can find both indoor and outdoor versions, with the outdoor pet bed warmers usually made from more rugged and weather-proof materials.
The nice thing about electric cat heating pads is that they retain their heat as long as they are powered so your cat can enjoy a nice extended cat nap.
And since they are standalone pet heating pads, they are very versatile and can be used with your cat's favorite blanket, pillow, or cat bed.
4) Electric Heated Cat Beds
This type of heated pet bed has both the ped bed warmer as well as the bed itself combined as one product.
Many heated cat beds also come with a built-in thermostat that will adjust the temperature of the cat bed.
Some are based on timers while the more sophisticated units can actually detect when a cat is in the bed and will adjust the temperature accordingly.
